THE GRAVE OF BLESSED FATHER JERZY POPIEŁUSZKO
When the corpse of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko was discovered on the 30th of October 1984, it was necessary to decide about the burial place. At first it was suggested that the Powązki cemetery would be appropriate. However, many friends of the departed, the congregation and prelate Teofil Bogucki (hospitalised at that time) applied to the Church authorities to allow their priest to be buried in the vicinity of the church he served in. Cardinal Józef Glemp gave his consent.
A well-known artist Józef Kalina designed a tomb in a shape of a mound.
A huge stone-bead rosary surrounds it in an outline of the Polish borders. The rosary cross lies in the centre of the tomb marking the position of the grave. One of the elements connecting the rosary beads is in shape of the crowned Polish Eagle bearing an image of the Holy Virgin from Jasna Góra on its chest.
Over the grave, on the nearby tree, there is a bronze figure of Christ designed by professor Gustaw Zemła.
THE CHURCH ORGANISATION SERVICE
Since the day of Father Jerzy’s funeral, night and day members of the Church Organisation Service have stood on guard by the grave. Many of them made a solemn pledge to serve until life them permits. Proud to have sacrificed themselves to the great idea, they are not easy to discourage. They often come from distant parts of Warsaw or even from the outskirts. Their service is a living sign of noble faithfulness.
They belong to a few distinct groups, spontaneously created after the funeral day: ”Totus Tuus” keeping guards at the grave, liturgy, medical and information services. The last one, called The Church Information Service, has run archives with various documents on Father Jerzy Popiełuszko.
