PILGRIMS AT THE GRAVE OF BLESSED JERZY POPIEŁUSZKO
Thousands of pilgrims pay their visit to the grave of blessed Father Jerzy. Their prayer gives rise to numerous conversions. Many people admit to have experienced spiritual transformation when coming to this special place. Some of the pilgrims received the sacrament of confession for the first time in a number of years.
From March 1985 until April 2010 over 18 million pilgrims visited the grave of blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, including about 310 500 foreigners. Circa 3 million pilgrims travelled in organized groups from 134 countries. Among the visitors there were priests, seminary students, parish congregations, Christian fellowships, occupational groups, members of the Solidarity Independent Trade Unions, social circles, groups of young people, children and tourists – to name but a few.
Bishops, priests, presidents and prime ministers from many different countries make pilgrimage to the grave of Venerable Father Jerzy Popiełuszko.
On the 14th of June 1987 Pope John Paul II prayed at the grave. Prelate Teofil Bogucki welcomed His Holiness at the gate of the church. The Holy Father prayed in the church interiors for a long while. Following the church prayer he passed to Father Jerzy’s grave. He laid flowers and prayed embracing the grave plate in his arms. He kissed it afterwards. Later he spoke to Father Jerzy’s relatives, signed the visitor’s book and consecrated a newly cast bell, named Jerzy after the Blessed Father.
Distinguished guests who paid their respects to the late Father Jerzy included primates and cardinals from Poland, England, Austria, Belarus, Brazil, The Czech Republic, Chile, The Philippines, France, Mexico, Germany, Rwanda and The United States, moreover cardinals and archbishops from The Holy See and leaders of various Papal congregations and committees.
