At the beginning of the beatification rite the Archbishop of Warsaw, Kazimierz Nycz, made the official request of the Pope ”humbly asking the Holy Father Benedict XVI to have included in the list of those Beatified the Venerable Servant of God Jerzy Popiełuszko”. Archbishop Kazimierz Nycz read then a short biography of the Servant of God Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. Afterwards, the Papal Representative, Archbishop Angelo Amato read in Latin the Apostolic Letter of Benedict XVI with which ”acceding to the request of the Archbishop of Warsaw, and that of many other Brothers in the Episcopate and of many faithful, after having received the assessment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints” the Pope declared that ”Venerable Servant of God Jerzy Popiełuszko, priest and martyr, persistent and tireless witness for Christ, shall henceforth be called Blessed and that his feast day shall be celebrated every year on 19th of October, on the day of his ascent to heaven, in those places and in accordace with the rules established by Law”. The Apostolic Letter of the Holy Father was read then in Polish by Archbishop Kazimierz Nycz.
After unveiling of Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko’s picture, four deacons took a relic of blessed Father Jerzy to the altar in a reliquary procession which included family members of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko – his mother, brothers and sister as well as prelate Zygmunt Malacki, the parish priest of St. Stanislaus Kostka’s church and parish representatives, among others: Mrs. Maria Fabianowicz (leading the Muzeum of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko in St. Stanislaus Kostka’s parish), Dr. Wojciech Noszczyk – well-known professor of medicine and sister Irena Okoń who had worked for long time in St. Stanislaus Kostka’s church.
Concluding the beatification rite, Archbishop Kazimierz Nycz gave his heartfelt thanks to Holy Father Benedict XVI ”for having (...) proclaimed the Venerable Servant of God Jerzy Popiełuszko, Blessed”.
During the Holy Mass Archbishop Angelo Amato gave also the homily in which he said about Father Jerzy’s dedication to the truth and love to God.
At the end of the beatification Mass at Piłsudski Square, the faithful listened to the words of Benedict XVI on the occasion of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko’s beatification. The Pope, after the Angelus Prayer during his apostolic visit to Cyprus, said: „I send cordial greetings to the Church in Poland, which today rejoices at the elevation to the altars of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. His zealous service and his martyrdom are a special sign of the victory of good over evil. May his example and his intercession nourish the zeal of priests and enkindle the faithful with love”.
After the Holy Mass, the reliquery with Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko’s relic was carried in a procession through the streets of Warsaw, along 14 km route to the National Temple of Divine Providence in Wilanów and placed there in The Pantheon of the Great Poles.
